Child riding a led pony at the farm

Pony riding on the farm: the first round in the saddle

For many children, their first pony ride is the moment they remember longest from their entire vacation. An adult leads the pony by the lead rope, the child sits on top and doesn't have to know anything. No riding lesson, no time limit, no pressure to perform, just rocking and feeling proud.

177 farms offer this. The ponies belong to the farm; they graze in the adjacent meadow and are used to children. Usually, the child gets to groom the ponies beforehand and give them a treat afterward, and for many, that's the best part.

Pony rides or riding lessons, what suits your child best?

This page: Pony rides

The pony is led, the child sits and enjoys the experience. No prior experience, equipment, or physical condition is needed. This is perfect for most children between the ages of three and seven; after that, they usually want to lead the pony themselves.

131 of these farms also have a petting zoo , and 116 offer tractor rides. So, pony rides are rarely the only activity.

For older children: Horse riding

When horseback riding , you sit in the saddle and steer the horse yourself, either in the arena or out on the trails, usually with instruction. This is worthwhile from around eight years old, when concentration and strength are sufficient, and of course for adults. 169 riding stables offer this.

Perfect for families with children of different ages: 110 farms offer both . The older children can go riding, the younger ones can take a walk, and you don't have to choose.

Zieglinde recounted

On 157 of the 177 farms, children are allowed to feed the animals themselves, and on 148 they can help with their care. I can tell you from experience: grooming the animals before the ride is more popular with many children than the riding itself. Brushing the horse, mane-washing, snorting – half an hour flies by.

And I noticed one difference: there are 91 of these farms in Germany, 73 in Austria, but only 9 in Italy. When it comes to riding for adults, it's exactly the opposite; Italy is far ahead with 44. Ponies are clearly a northern thing.

Frequently asked questions about pony rides on the farm

Most riding stables accept children from around three years old, as soon as they can sit securely. Some accept younger children, in which case a parent walks alongside and the ride is shorter. There's no upper age limit, but most children want to steer themselves from about eight years old. Then proper riding lessons are the next step. When inquiring, ask about the minimum age at each stable, as they all have slightly different rules.

Usually, the child gets to meet the pony first, petting and grooming it. Then someone helps them mount, puts on a helmet, and leads the pony at a walk around the yard or meadow. No trotting, no cantering, just a calm walk. At the end, the pony often gets a treat. How long a ride lasts and how often it's offered varies from farm to farm, so the best questions to ask are the best ones to inquire about.

Each farm handles this differently. On some farms, pony rides are part of the program and included in the stay, while on others they are charged separately. Ask about this when you inquire, and also how often pony rides are offered. Grooming and feeding are almost always free, and for many children, that's the best part.

Not usually. Riding stables almost always provide helmets in various sizes, and riding is done at a walk on a lead rope. Sturdy shoes with a small heel are practical, as are long trousers to prevent chafing. If you have your own riding breeches or helmet, feel free to bring them, but it's not necessary.

Colloquially, a farm where ponies live and children are allowed to interact with them. On bauernhofurlaub.info, this corresponds to the farms listed on this page: 158 of them have their own ponies, and 91 are managed as horse farms . If you only want to know where ponies are kept but not ridden, the "Ponies on the Farm" filter will help, listing 243 establishments.

145 of the farms are open in winter, and many offer pony rides even in snow. Whether there's an indoor riding arena isn't indicated in the filters, so be sure to ask if you want to ride in all weather. Conveniently, 112 of these farms have a toboggan run , and 94 are located near ski resorts , so there's no shortage of options.

This happens often and is absolutely no problem. Usually, it's enough to just watch, pet the pony, and help with grooming. Many children climb on by themselves on the third day. 131 of these farms also have a petting zoo with smaller animals, which is often an easier way to get started.
