Time out for our grazing animals on the holiday farms
holiday on a farm
Some stables are empty in the summer months, so you should take this into account when planning your holiday on the farm!

A summer holiday on a farm is childhood as it should be. On 656 farms in Austria, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland, children experience summer without a schedule: running barefoot through meadows, feeding cows, playing in the hay, building dams in the stream. Here, there's no timed entertainment program, just real life between the barn and the playground. 625 farms are perfect for families, 563 have playgrounds, 357 offer swimming nearby, and 149 are located directly on a lake. Whether hiking in the mountains, exploring bike paths, or simply relaxing, a summer holiday on a farm means freedom instead of a hotel program.
The big difference compared to holiday clubs and hotels: children have real freedom instead of tightly scheduled entertainment. They're allowed to get dirty, play in the mud, and pet calves whenever they want. In the morning, there's no alarm clock, but the clucking of chickens. After breakfast, it's off to the barn for feeding, then onto the tractor with the farmer, a dip in the stream or pool at midday, and hide-and-seek in the hay in the afternoon.
Parents enjoy the relaxation: no need to worry about where the children are, they're playing safely on the farm. No constant entertaining is required; the animals and other farm children take care of the rest. Many farms are situated in peaceful locations, surrounded by meadows and forests. In the evenings, the campfire crackles, sausages are grilled, and children recount their adventures. This is what holidays were like before tablets existed.
Cows and calves: the heart of every farm. Children can help with feeding, bottle-feed calves, and learn where milk comes from. In summer, many cows are out in the pasture, where you can watch them grazing. Some farmers take guests to the alpine pastures where the animals spend the summer.
Horses and ponies: 171 farms offer pony rides for the youngest children. Older children can take riding lessons or go on trail rides through forests and meadows at some farms. Learning to groom, feed, and saddle horses is part of the experience. For city children, it's often their first contact with such large animals.
Goats, sheep, rabbits: petting animals to cuddle and feed. Goats climb all over and love treats. Rabbits hop around their enclosure, and sheep enjoy being petted. Children learn responsibility: animals need food, water, and care, even on vacation. Many farms let children adopt their own animal, which they look after all week.
Chickens, geese, ducks: Collecting eggs from the henhouse in the morning is a highlight for children. Some farms have chicks hatching or geese waddling noisily around the yard. At the duck pond, the ducks quack, and children are allowed to feed and watch them.
Hiking for families: Gentle trails start right from the farm, leading through forests, across meadows, and to scenic viewpoints. Many farmers know secret paths to streams, waterfalls, or hidden playgrounds. Stroller-friendly paths are available almost everywhere, and for older children, there are themed hikes with riddles and activity stations. After two hours, return to the farm, enjoy a snack, and then it's off to the hayloft.
Cycling and cycle paths: 560 farms are located on or near cycle paths. Flat routes along rivers are ideal for families with young children, while mountain bike trails cater to more athletic cyclists. Many farms rent out bicycles, child trailers, and e-bikes. The most scenic cycle tours lead from farm to farm, with stops at local farms for milk, cheese, and cider.
Swimming and bathing: 357 farms offer swimming opportunities: natural bathing ponds on the farm, streams for paddling, and outdoor swimming pools nearby. 149 farms are located directly on a lake , where you can walk to the water in the morning instead of getting in the car. Lake Chiemsee, Lake Garda, Lake Millstatt, and Lake Attersee are top regions for farm holidays with swimming fun.
Playgrounds and play barns: 563 farms have their own playgrounds, often with a trampoline, slide, swings, and sandbox. In case of rain, children can head to the play barn with table tennis, table football, and a bouncy castle. Larger farms have go-kart tracks, football pitches, or basketball hoops. Children meet other farm children and play for hours without their parents.

Wellington boots are a must: Children on farms play in streams, run through puddles, and help in the barn. Pack at least one pair of wellies, preferably two. They're invaluable in rainy weather, and in sunshine too.
Pack tons of spare clothes: Farm kids come back filthy. Mud, grass, animal feed – everything ends up on their clothes. Pack way more spare clothes than you think you'll need. Many farms have washing machines you can use.
Don't forget sun protection: There's little shade on the farm, the meadows are open, and the mountain sun is stronger than you might expect. High SPF sunscreen, hats for children, and applying sunscreen several times a day are essential!
149 farms are located directly on the lake or in its immediate vicinity. The best of both worlds: a morning at the cowshed, a midday swim at the beach, and an evening campfire back at the farm. The most popular lake regions:
Chiemsee, Bavaria: The Bavarian Sea with its shallow shores, perfect for small children. Farms are located around the lake, often just a 10-minute walk from the beach. Excursions to Herreninsel (Men's Island), cycling tours along the shore, sailing, and stand-up paddleboarding are all possible.
Lake Garda, Italy: A combination of alpine mountain scenery and Mediterranean flair. South Tyrolean and Trentino farmhouses in the mountains above the lake offer breathtaking views. Hike in the morning, swim in the lake in the afternoon. Warm water from May to September.
Lakes in Carinthia, Austria: Lake Wörthersee, Lake Ossiach, and Lake Millstatt are among the warmest bathing lakes in the Alps. Farms near the lakes combine mountain experiences with guaranteed swimming. Many have their own private beach access or boat docks.
Salzkammergut, Austria: Lake Attersee, Lake Traunsee, Lake Wolfgangsee surrounded by mountains and alpine meadows. Crystal-clear water, picturesque villages, rustic farmhouses. Perfect for families who want to combine culture, nature, and swimming.
Summer holidays on a farm are often cheaper than hotels, offering more space and an authentic experience. Prices vary depending on the region, amenities, and season.
Holiday apartments in the off-season (June, September): €55 to €100 per night for 4 people. Self-catering with kitchen, living room, often a balcony or terrace. €14 to €25 per person. Very affordable for families who cook for themselves. Farms often have farm shops where you can buy milk, eggs, bacon, and bread.
Holiday apartments in high season (July, August): €80 to €140 per night for 4 people. In top regions like South Tyrol, Lake Garda, or the Allgäu, prices can reach €180. Children under 3 often stay free, and children up to 12 years old receive a discount. Minimum stay is usually 7 nights in high season.
Rooms with breakfast: 40 to 65 euros per person per night. A hearty farm breakfast with farm-fresh products: fresh eggs, bacon, cheese, jam, and bread. Children pay 50 to 70 percent depending on their age. No shopping or cooking required – start your day off right.
Half board: 55 to 85 euros per person per night. Breakfast and dinner, often 3 to 4 courses featuring regional specialties. Perfect after a day full of activities, as you don't have to cook in the evening. Children often receive children's portions at reduced prices.
Extras and money-saving tips: Many activities on the farm are free: feeding the animals, tractor rides, playground, campfire. Tickets to amusement parks or mountain railways are often available at a discount from the farmer. Guest cards in many regions offer discounts for swimming pools, museums, and public transport.
The Alps (201 farms): The premier region for mountain summers. From Vorarlberg through Tyrol to Salzburg, at altitudes of 600 to 1500 meters. Hiking in the Alps , clear mountain air, alpine meadows full of flowers. Particularly beautiful: Zillertal, Stubaital, Kitzbühel Alps, Montafon.
Germany (213 farms): From the Allgäu region through Bavaria to the North Sea. Germany offers short travel times for German families, moderate prices, and child-friendly infrastructure. The Allgäu and Chiemgau regions offer mountains, the Black Forest hiking trails, and the North Sea and Baltic Sea coasts proximity to the beach.
Italy (154 farms): South Tyrol, Trentino, Lake Garda, Tuscany. An Italian farm summer combines the Alps with a Mediterranean climate. South Tyrolean farms are often very comfortable, with saunas, pools, and gourmet breakfasts. Lake Garda offers swimming and mountains at the same time.
Bavaria (92 farms): Allgäu, Chiemgau, Bavarian Forest, Upper Bavaria. Bavaria is perfect for families: short travel distance, many amusement parks nearby, rich in lakes and mountains. Traditional farms with genuine Bavarian hospitality.
Farm holidays are suitable for all ages, but they are most enjoyable from 2 to 3 years old, when children can observe the animals and actively participate. Here are the age groups:
Babies and toddlers (0 to 3 years): Many farms have baby equipment: high chair, crib, changing table, sometimes even a bottle warmer. The fresh country air is good for babies; they sleep better. Toddlers love animals, even if they can't fully participate yet. Look for ground-floor holiday apartments without stairs.
Kindergarten age (3 to 6 years): The perfect time for a farm holiday! Children are mobile enough for hikes, old enough to feed animals, but still fully in the magical phase. Tractor rides, petting calves, and playing in the hay are the highlights. Pony rides are possible from age 3.
Primary school age (6 to 12 years): Children can really help out: bringing in hay, collecting eggs, harvesting vegetables. They understand the connections between agriculture and food. Longer hikes, bike rides, and nearby climbing parks are possible. Friendships often develop with other children on farms, lasting beyond the holiday.
Teenagers (12 and up): Yes, teenagers love farms too, as long as the farm is cool. Farms with a pool, beach volleyball, go-karts, or located near action activities like rafting, canyoning, or climbing routes are ideal. Some teenagers actually help out in the barn, learn to drive a tractor, or do an internship during the holidays.
A major advantage of a farm holiday: you eat what's produced right there on the farm. It doesn't get any fresher than that. The milk comes from the cows you see grazing in the pasture every morning. You collect the eggs yourself from the henhouse. The vegetables grow in the garden, and you cut your own herbs for the salad.
Breakfast from the farm: butter, yogurt, milk, cheese—all homemade. Jam made from our own berries, honey from the farm beekeeper, bacon smoked in our own smokehouse. Bread often from the village baker or homemade. A breakfast children will never forget, and they'll suddenly be eating vegetables they would never touch at home.
Farm shops and direct sales: Almost every farm sells its own products. You can buy things for your holiday apartment or to take home with you. Farm-fresh bacon, cheese, cider, schnapps, jams, sometimes even meat from their own cattle. Prices are often lower than in the supermarket, and the quality is incomparably better.
Regional specialties: Every region has its own unique features. South Tyrol: Speck (cured ham), Schüttelbrot (crisp flatbread), Graukäse (grey cheese). Bavaria: Obatzda (Bavarian cheese spread), Weißwurst (white sausage), Brezn (pretzels). Carinthia: Kärntner Kasnudeln (cheese noodles), Reindling (a sweet bread). Salzburg: Bauernkrapfen (farmer's doughnuts), Pinzgauer Kasnocken (cheese dumplings). Many farms offer cooking classes where you can learn how to prepare regional dishes.
Rain on the farm is no problem, often even a highlight for children! Many farms have large play barns or playrooms with table tennis, table football, bouncy castles, ball pits, or play areas. There's always something to do in the barn: feeding the animals, helping to muck out the stalls, and distributing hay are fun even in the rain because the barn is dry. Crafting with the farmer's wife is often on the agenda, and some farms have pottery or woodworking workshops where children can learn to carve. Jumping through puddles in rubber boots and collecting earthworms is something children love anyway. Many farming families have children themselves and know exactly how to make rainy days exciting. For extended periods of bad weather, there are often indoor swimming pools, indoor playgrounds, or museums nearby in the region, and the farmers know all the best tips for rainy days.
It depends on the allergy. For hay fever and pollen allergies, country air can even be better than city air because there are fewer exhaust fumes to irritate the airways. However, pollen from grasses and grains is naturally prevalent in the countryside, especially in June and July. Ask the farmer about the pollen situation during your travel dates. It's more complicated with pet allergies: farms have animals, and pet hair is everywhere. However, some studies show that children who have early contact with farm animals are less likely to develop allergies. Talk to your doctor beforehand to see if a farm is suitable for you. There are also farms without direct animal contact, for example, purely arable farms or fruit farms. For food allergies, farms are often ideal because you know exactly what's in the food, and farmers can be flexible and accommodate individual needs.
Most modern farms offer Wi-Fi, especially in holiday apartments and common rooms. The quality varies: in valleys and at lower elevations it's usually fast and stable, while in mountainous regions it's sometimes slower or has dead spots. Many farms advertise their Wi-Fi because parents often have to work or teenagers can't survive without the internet. Some farms deliberately don't offer Wi-Fi or only offer it in the common room, not in the guest rooms, to promote a digital detox. If Wi-Fi is important to you, ask specifically about it when booking and check if it's available at your accommodation. Mobile phone reception is available almost everywhere, except in very remote mountain valleys. Tip: Take advantage of the opportunity for a digital break! Many families report that holidays without constantly checking their phones are much more relaxing and children play more creatively.
On real farms, children can genuinely help out; it's not a staged program. Being there at 7 a.m. for feeding, distributing hay, collecting eggs, bottle-feeding calves – that's real daily life. Of course, children are given tasks they can manage and that are safe. Younger children can feed chickens or pet rabbits, older children can help watch the milking with the machine, push the manure cart, or lend a hand with the hay harvest. Farmers appreciate genuine interest and are happy to explain how their farm works. Important: It's work, not a petting zoo. Some days are busy, and the farmer has less time. Other days, you can help out for hours. Most farming families love it when children show interest and want to experience real agriculture. That's what distinguishes farms from theme parks: Here, everything is authentic.
Summer holidays on a farm are possible from May to September, with each month having its own unique charm. May and June are ideal for hiking and enjoying nature: everything is in bloom, the meadows are green, cows are grazing on the alpine pastures, and calves are born. Prices are often lower than in peak season, there are fewer tourists, and the temperatures are pleasant. July and August are peak season: warm weather for swimming, long days, perfect for families during school holidays. However, prices are also higher, and the farms are busier. September is a hidden gem: the weather is often still summery, prices drop, harvest festivals take place, and you can help with the harvest. Picking apples, digging up potatoes, and pressing cider are great experiences for children. If your children aren't yet of school age, go in June or September; you'll save money and enjoy a more peaceful stay.
Many farms allow dogs, but by no means all. Some farms have their own dogs and welcome four-legged guests. Others refuse to let strangers' dogs because there could be problems with their own animals or the farm dog. When searching, you can specifically filter for dog-friendly farms. Important: Even if dogs are allowed, there are rules. Dogs usually have to be kept on a leash, are not allowed to roam freely in barns where farm animals are kept, and not all holiday apartments allow dogs in the sleeping area. Some farms charge a small fee for dogs, between 5 and 15 euros per night for cleaning. If your dog is well-behaved and you are considerate of the farm, nothing stands in the way of a holiday together. For dogs, a farm holiday is a dream come true: meadows to run in, exciting smells, and the chance to observe other animals.
Every year, we award the Top Farm Award to particularly welcoming and authentic farms. Many of the award-winning farms are true summer specialists: with large playgrounds, petting animals, swimming ponds, perfect locations for hiking, and farming families who love children. These award-winning farms embody hospitality with heart and will make your summer vacation unforgettable. You can find out more about the award on our Top Farm Award page .
