What makes a winter holiday on a farm so special?
The big difference compared to hotels: You're right in the heart of real farm life, even in winter. In the mornings, you can watch the cows being fed in the warm barn, and children can help with mucking out or distributing hay. After skiing or sledding, you return to a crackling fireplace and homemade cookies, not an anonymous hotel lobby. The children play in the snow in front of the house, build igloos with the farm children, and learn how farmers work in winter.
Many farms are located away from the hustle and bustle, in peaceful settings with views of snow-covered mountains. No party noise, no après-ski stress, just crunching snow underfoot and tranquility. At the same time, you're close enough to ski resorts, cross-country trails, and toboggan runs. The best of both worlds: nature and family on the farm, action on the slopes.
Skiing directly from the farm: 42 farms on the ski slope
Right on the ski slope: 42 farms are located so close to the lift that you can reach them on foot or by sled. Make the first tracks in the morning, return to the farm for lunch, and head out again in the afternoon. No shuttle bus, no parking stress. Especially ideal for families with small children: if a child gets cold, you're back in the warm living room in 5 minutes.
Skiing nearby: 331 farms have ski areas within a 5- to 20-minute drive. Often there are free ski bus connections, or the farmers will drive you to the lift. The advantage: In the evening, you can quickly escape the hustle and bustle of the ski area and enjoy peace and quiet on the farm. Prices are usually lower than directly on the slopes, with comparable quality accommodation.
Ski rental on the farm: Many farms rent out skis, cross-country skis, snowshoes, and sleds directly on the premises. This saves a trip to the ski rental shop in the valley, and the equipment is often in excellent condition. Children's skis are usually free or very inexpensive, and some farms even have small practice slopes right on the property for those first turns.
Sledding, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing
Sledding right on your doorstep: 358 farms offer sledding fun directly on the farm or in the immediate vicinity. From small hills for three-year-olds to long natural toboggan runs through the forest. Many farms lend out sleds free of charge; you don't need to bring anything. In the evenings, there's sometimes an illuminated night toboggan run – an experience that will make children's eyes light up.
Cross-country skiing through winter landscapes: Many farms are located directly on cross-country ski trails that lead right from the farm. Classic or skating style, groomed and prepared. The Alpine regions often have high-altitude trails with breathtaking views, while in the Bavarian Forest or Allgäu, trails wind through snow-covered forests. Some farms offer beginner courses themselves or can arrange for cross-country ski instructors.
Snowshoeing: A trend of recent years, especially popular with families and older people. You trek through untouched powder snow, off the slopes, through winter forests and across alpine meadows. Many farmers themselves lead snowshoe hikes and show you wildlife tracks, viewpoints, and insider tips of the region. You can rent snowshoes at many farms.
Winter holidays with children: Snow adventures instead of childcare
Children love winter holidays on a farm because they have freedom. No scheduled entertainment program, but real adventures: building igloos, snowball fights, visiting animals in the warm barn, trudging through the snowy farmyard with the farmer. Many farms offer:
Sledding hill on the farm: Private little slopes for sledding, often floodlit until evening. Children can go up and down a hundred times without their parents. Safe, close to the house, perfect for the little ones.
Barn experiences in winter: Calves are there even in winter, cows are in the warm barn and enjoy visitors. Children can feed them, distribute hay, and sometimes even watch the milking. This is even more immersive in winter because the animals spend more time in the barn and are more approachable.
Crafts and baking: Many farms offer craft and baking afternoons in winter. Bake cookies like Grandma used to, make Advent wreaths, carve wooden figures. A welcome change of pace in bad weather or after a long day of skiing.

Zieglinde's 3 winter tips from the farm
Layering is essential: It's warm in the barn, cold outside, and you'll sweat on the ski slopes. Pack lots of thin layers instead of one thick sweater. That way you can adjust and no one will be too cold or too hot.
Snow pants for farm children: Hotel children play indoors, farm children play in the snow. Pack sturdy snow pants that can get dirty. And a spare pair in case one gets wet. Some farms have heated drying rooms.
Early to bed: winter air makes you tired, and skiing even more so. Don't plan any evening activities. The best thing is the tiled stove, hot chocolate, and going to bed early. Tomorrow will be another snowy day!
How much does a winter holiday on a farm cost?
Winter holidays on a farm are often cheaper than hotels, offering more space and personal interaction. Prices vary depending on the region, season, and amenities.
Holiday apartment in the off-season (December, March): €60 to €110 per night for 4 people. Self-catering, large eat-in kitchen, usually with a balcony. That works out to €15 to €28 per person. Unbeatably affordable for families who enjoy cooking their own meals.
Holiday apartments in high season (Christmas, New Year, February): 90 to 180 euros per night for 4 people. Some farms have a minimum stay of 7 days over Christmas. Book early, the best farms are often booked months in advance.
Rooms with breakfast: 45 to 75 euros per person per night. Often includes a hearty farmer's breakfast with farm-fresh products, eggs, bacon, and jam. No cooking required; start your day refreshed and ready to hit the slopes.
Half board: 60 to 95 euros per person per night. Breakfast and dinner, often multi-course menus with regional specialties. Perfect if you don't feel like cooking after skiing. Children often receive a discount.
Ski passes and extras: Most farms sell ski passes cheaper than at the ticket office or have partnerships with ski resorts. Ask about family passes or multi-day passes with discounts. Sled rental is usually free, and ski rental at the farm is often 20 to 30 percent cheaper than in the valley.
The best regions for winter holidays on a farm
The Alps (189 farms): The premier region for winter holidays in the Alps . From Vorarlberg through Tyrol to Salzburg, at altitudes ranging from 800 to 1600 meters. Guaranteed snow from December to April, many farms are located directly next to ski resorts. The Bregenzerwald, Zillertal, Stubaital, and Pinzgau regions are top destinations.
Bavaria (84 farms): Especially Bavaria with the Allgäu, Chiemgau and Bavarian Forest regions. Family-friendly ski resorts, moderate prices, easily accessible even from Northern Germany. Snow is usually guaranteed above 900 meters, many farms have their own toboggan run.
Allgäu (42 farms): Gentle hills, breathtaking views, and cozy ski resorts. The Allgäu region is perfect for families with young children. Small ski areas without crowds, numerous cross-country ski trails, rustic farmhouses with tiled stoves, and genuine hospitality.
South Tyrol and Trentino: a combination of alpine scenery and Italian lifestyle. South Tyrolean farmhouses are often very comfortably equipped, with saunas, play barns, and gourmet breakfasts. Ski resorts like Val Gardena, Alta Badia, and Kronplatz are world-famous, yet you can still find quiet farms away from the crowds.
Winter holiday over Christmas and New Year's
Christmas on the farm: Many farms offer special Christmas programs: visits to Christmas markets, nativity plays, baking cookies together, and sometimes even midnight mass in the farm chapel. The Christmas tree often comes from the farm's own forest, and the decorations are real, not store-bought. Families rave about the peace and tranquility, far removed from the stress of consumerism.
New Year's Eve on a farm: No noisy hotel party, but a cozy get-together. Many farms offer New Year's Eve menus with regional specialties, lead pouring for children, and a midnight toast with sparkling wine from the farm. At midnight, you can watch the fireworks in the surrounding mountains without having to set them off yourself. On New Year's Day, you can then head straight to the slopes or take a New Year's Day walk through the winter forest.
Minimum stays: Over Christmas and New Year's, many farms have minimum stays of 5 to 7 nights. This is intentional, so that the farming families can have some peace and quiet and don't have to constantly organize arrivals and departures. It's best to book a full New Year's package, often including half-board and a festive menu.
Stables and animals in winter: A special experience
In winter, animals spend more time in the barn than in summer, which is fascinating for children. They see how farmers work in winter, how the animals are fed, and how warm it is in the barn despite the cold outside. Many farms explain to children in a way they can understand why cows stay indoors in winter and what they eat.
Calves in the winter barn: Calves are born even in winter. You can visit them, pet them, and sometimes help with bottle feeding. A highlight for city children who otherwise never have contact with animals.
Chickens and rabbits: Smaller animals often live in heated coops or have access to a run with snow. Children can collect eggs; chickens lay eggs even in winter, and rabbits enjoy carrots and being petted.
Horses in the snow: Some farms offer winter rides or carriage rides through snowy landscapes. A magical experience, especially when it's snowing softly and the horses are trudging through the woods. For younger children, there are often pony rides through the snow.
The traditional winter season on a farm runs from the beginning of December to the end of March, and in higher altitudes sometimes until mid-April. January and February offer the most reliable snow cover. Many farms offer Advent holidays starting as early as the end of November, complete with Christmas markets, Krampus parades, and a festive pre-Christmas atmosphere. In regions above 1200 meters, such as Tyrol, Salzburg, or South Tyrol, you can expect snow from December to March. In the Allgäu and the Bavarian Forest, snow is usually guaranteed from January onwards. Tip: Book farms at 900 meters and above for guaranteed snow, or ask the farmer about the current snow conditions beforehand. Many farms have webcams on their websites.
Many farms rent out skis, cross-country skis, snowshoes, and sleds directly on the farm, often more cheaply than at ski rental shops in the valley. When booking, ask what equipment is available and in what sizes. Children usually have free or very inexpensive rental skis; some farms even have complete children's sets with helmets, gloves, and poles. If you have your own equipment, bring it along for more flexibility. However, for families, it's worth traveling without bulky skis in the car, especially with several children. Most farms have heated ski storage rooms or drying rooms where equipment can dry overnight. Cross-country skis and snowshoes are almost always available for rent on the farm; this is standard practice at winter farms.
Yes, practically all ski resorts near the farms have ski schools with children's courses starting at age 3 or 4. Many farms partner with specific ski schools and can arrange group lessons or private lessons, often at a discount. The farmers know which ski schools are good and which instructors are patient with beginners. Some farms even have their own small practice slopes right on the property, where children can learn their first turns before heading to the main ski area. This takes the pressure off and is more relaxed than going directly to a crowded beginner's slope. Ask for ski school recommendations when booking and book early, as ski courses fill up quickly, especially during the Christmas and semester breaks. Many ski schools pick up and drop off children directly at the farm.
Absolutely! Many families deliberately choose to come without skiing and enjoy the peace and quiet, nature, and farm life. Sledding, snowshoeing, winter hikes, igloo building, cross-country skiing, horse-drawn sleigh rides, and of course, the farm animals offer enough to keep them occupied for a week or longer. Especially with young children under six, a non-skiing holiday is often more relaxing: The children play in the snow in front of the house, help in the barn, do crafts with the farmer's wife, and don't need an expensive ski program. Winter holidays without skiing are also wonderful for couples or older people: cross-country skiing on quiet trails, snowshoe tours through forests, sitting by the fireplace in the evening and enjoying the peace and quiet. Prices are often lower than in the high ski season, and you sometimes have the farms almost to yourself because many guests are on the slopes.
It depends on the farm. 42 farms are located directly on the ski slope, so you can walk there. For the others, there are various options: Many ski resorts have free ski bus lines that stop directly at the farm or at the nearest bus stop. The farmers know the timetables and can tell you when and where you need to be. Some farms offer their own shuttle service to the lift, especially for guests with small children. Having your own car gives you more flexibility, and parking spaces at ski resorts are usually available, but can be expensive in peak season (5 to 15 euros per day). When booking, ask about the distance to the nearest lift and the available transport options. Most farms have this well organized, as that's precisely why their guests come. Taxi services are available in all regions, but are more expensive than taking the bus or using your own car.
Many modern farms have their own saunas, infrared cabins, or small wellness areas. This is especially wonderful after a long day of skiing: relax in the sauna, soothe your muscles, then head out into the snow or take a cold shower. Some farms also offer massages, either by the farmer herself or by partner therapists. Hot tubs or swimming pools are less common, but can be found on larger farms. If wellness is important to you, specifically filter for farms with saunas or wellness facilities. But be aware: farm wellness is not comparable to a hotel spa. It's smaller, more intimate, and often only for guests. However, it's more authentic and often features rustic wooden buildings with views of snow-covered mountains. For many, this is more appealing than anonymous hotel spas.
