You wake up to nothing but the gentle mooing of cows in the pasture. No cell phone alarm, no buzzing Wi-Fi signal, no flashing screens. At Hof Keppel near Schmallenberg in the Sauerland region, you'll experience a holiday in its purest form: completely without electricity, but with everything your family truly needs.
Live like in the old days with all the comforts of today
The Schauerte family has created a unique vacation concept on their half-timbered farmstead, built in 1890: log cabin-style holiday homes that deliberately forgo electricity. Sounds spartan at first? It isn't. Because instead of deprivation, you'll find a completely new feeling of freedom here.
In these cozy accommodations, you'll sleep in real, comfortable beds. The wood-burning stove provides a pleasant warmth and also serves as a cooking area. And yes, there's even a hot shower. What's missing? Only the things that often distract us from what's essential in everyday life.
Absolute peace and quiet in a beautiful, secluded location
At an altitude of 440 meters, surrounded by 94 hectares of grassland and 14.5 hectares of forest, Hof Keppel enjoys a wonderfully secluded location. The absolute tranquility amidst nature offers breathtaking views of the region. Three generations live here under one roof: Frank and Hanna with their children Anton, Greta, and Henri, as well as Frank's parents, Hubertus and Elisabeth.
A holiday without electricity allows you to slow down and rediscover the simple things in life. The morning coffee ritual and recurring experiences like feeding chickens and calves, collecting eggs, or taking ponies to pasture create experiences that are simply not possible in the routine of everyday life at home.
What children experience here
For your children, Hof Keppel is a giant adventure playground. There's a large playground with a trampoline, swings, a sandbox, and a mud kitchen. The stables can be entered at any time during the day. During feeding and milking times, you can watch the animals being fed and milked. Upon request, children are also welcome to help with the stable chores.
These animals are looking forward to visitors:
- 30 hens with a rooster, fresh eggs come directly from the henhouse
- Ponies Snickers and Pedro are looking forward to being thoroughly groomed.
- Donkey Lexy for extensive petting sessions
- Many calves to pet and feed
- 5 sheep and 5 rabbits to observe
Important: Feeding the animals only takes place under the supervision of the farm family. Please remain quiet around the animals.
A concept with tradition
For over five years, the Schauerte family has relied on this concept, originally from the Netherlands, which promises sustainable relaxation in harmony with nature. Families from Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, France, and Sweden have already visited the farm and were amazed at how quickly they felt grounded again.
A special symbol of the farm's tradition is the farm bell: In 1907, a bronze bell weighing approximately 50 kilograms was installed on the gable of the farmhouse at Keppel Farm. The bell was a gift from the milliner Maria Esleben and was intended to bring peace to the farms on the Keppel. Since then, the bell has been rung by hand twice a day, and its sound still echoes through the Arpe Valley daily at noon and 6 p.m.
Life on the farm: These animals are waiting for you
The farm houses dairy cows and their offspring, and also fattens bulls. The dairy cows have been milked by a milking robot since March 2019. Currently, the following animals live on Keppel Farm:
- 65 cows
- 4 mother cows with their calves
- 120 fattening bulls
- 50 calves and young cattle
- 30 hens and 1 rooster
- 2 ponies (Snickers and Pedro)
- 1 donkey (Lexy)
- 2 dogs
- 3 cats
- 5 sheep
- 5 rabbits
Please note: Unfortunately, no pets brought along are allowed at Hof Keppel.
Pure nature all around the farm
The pastures are spread around the farm, and the cows can spend day and night outdoors in spring, summer, and autumn if they wish. Numerous hiking trails lead through the surrounding forests and meadows, bringing you closer to nature.
The cultivated areas include:
- 14.5 hectares of forest with spruce, beech, larch and oak trees
- 94 hectares of grassland
- 11.5 hectares of arable land for silage maize and clover grass
You can simply enjoy the peace and quiet on the farm or use the many hiking trails that lead through forests and meadows.
