Farm holidays: over 1,000 farms in seven countries

A farm holiday means waking up to the sounds of nature, instead of the alarm clock ringing. Children are the first ones in the barn in the morning. Parents realize in the evening that they didn't need any organized activities all day. And hosts who respond personally to your inquiries.

On bauernhofurlaub.info you'll find over 1,000 farms in Austria, Germany, Italy, Croatia, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Slovenia. Guests have rated these farms 155,225 times, with an average rating of 4.8 out of 5. Each farm is editorially reviewed, and you always contact the farming family directly.

What makes a farm holiday special

Animals to touch and help with

Cats live on 589 farms, chickens on 496, and cows on 430. But more important than just watching is participating: children are allowed to help with feeding on 455 farms, collect eggs on 307, and ride along on tractors on 286.

Space instead of program

658 farms are situated in a quiet location , a hiking trail starts right at the front door of 621 farms, and a cycle path begins at 576 farms. 570 farms have a playground , and 296 have a petting zoo .

Cook yourself or be catered for

521 farms rent out self-catering apartments, 366 deliver fresh bread rolls in the morning, 285 serve breakfast , and 79 also offer half-board . 188 have their own farm shop .

Summer and winter

680 farms are open in summer , 542 in winter . This is unusually balanced for a holiday portal and is due to the alpine businesses: 365 offer tobogganing , 341 offer skiing nearby.

Zieglinde's three tips for the search

First the region, then the amenities. Select a country or region above and then filter by animals, pool, or catering. Otherwise, you'll often end up with three farms scattered across Europe.

Check the reviews. 295 farms have collected more than a hundred guest reviews. Where many people have written reviews, you'll know pretty much what to expect.

Just ask. You're writing directly to the farming family, not a booking center. And if you ask beforehand whether there are any calves or when they'll be harvesting hay, you'll get an honest answer and often a helpful tip as well.

Frequently asked questions about holidays on a farm

It's most popular with families, and 649 farms are specifically designed for families . But it offers more: 542 farms are suitable for those seeking peace and quiet , 521 for couples , and 461 for seniors . Those traveling without children will find particularly quiet farms, especially during the off-season.

This depends on the country, region, season, and amenities; a self-catering apartment in the Waldviertel region is quite different from an agriturismo with a pool in Tuscany. You can see the price for each farm directly in the search results, and you can also filter by budget , mid-range , and premium price categories . Detailed information can be found under "what does a farm holiday cost?" and "budget farm holiday" .

You contact the farming family directly, either via the form on the farm listing or by phone. The response comes personally from the farm, not from a booking center. In your inquiry, please specify your travel dates, number of people, and the ages of any children, so you can discuss everything that's important to you.

The selection is surprisingly balanced: 680 farms are open in summer , 621 in autumn , 603 in spring , and 542 in winter . In spring, the calves and lambs are present; in summer, it's alpine pasture time; in autumn, the harvest takes place; and in winter, the animals are kept in barns and are particularly accessible for children. Prices are usually lower outside of school holidays.

Each year, it recognizes the businesses with the best guest reviews. For 2026, 50 farms have received the award, which you can find under Top Farms 2026. The award is based on genuine guest reviews, not editorial selection. More information about the award process can be found on the Top Farm Award page .

Dogs are welcome on 251 farms, and on another 270 by prior arrangement . Together, that's over 500 farms, or half of the portal. Because farm animals also live on these properties, there are usually a few rules regarding leashes and exercise time, which you can clarify when you make your inquiry.

No, participation is always optional, never mandatory. You can help with feeding on 455 farms, with animal care on 331, and with haymaking on 239. For most children, this is the best part of their holiday, and adults are welcome to simply watch.
