Farm holidays at Lake Weissensee: two farms, both excellent

Lake Weissensee lies at an altitude of 930 meters and is the highest bathing lake in Carinthia. Two-thirds of its eleven-kilometer shoreline is undeveloped, motorboats are not permitted, and large sections of the road on the northern shore are closed to through traffic. The water is of drinking water quality.

In winter, the lake freezes over and becomes the largest prepared natural ice surface in Europe, complete with its own ice master who checks the thickness. Both farms are located right on its shores, and both rent out sleds and snowshoes. Anyone who has seen it once will come back in winter.

And early in the morning, the mountains are reflected in the water before the first swimmer disturbs the stillness. This view is worth getting up for, even though I personally stay on the shore.
