Off to Rodeneck, Mühlbach and the Zillertal Alps

Off to Rodeneck, Mühlbach and the Zillertal Alps - bauernhofurlaub.info

North of Brixen, where you come from the Eisack Valley to the Puster Valley, lies Rodeneck. High above the valley sits the Leierhof farm. To be more precise, the Residence Leierhof farm. With a fantastic view, a heated pool, a hay sauna and delicious meals on request, the holiday farm in South Tyrol leaves nothing to be desired. Where else can you express your wish for breakfast or half board at short notice? The associated hotel nearby makes flexible meals possible.

The Leierhof offers a wide range of activities, especially for families with children, including a lawn and playground, a playroom and, from autumn 2024, its own play barn. Guests also love the trip to the farm's own alpine pasture, which is home to the young cattle in summer. If you can't get enough of alpine and mountain experiences, you can use the South Tyrolean Almencard, which is included in your holiday at the Leierhof. This tourism card offers numerous discounts in the Gitschberg Jochtal hiking and skiing area. As an atmospheric get-together, a barbecue afternoon with guests is held once a week on the farm from June. A particularly good opportunity to enjoy the view and nature in Rodeneck .

The Residence Leierhof farm impresses with its location, the high-quality facilities – especially for families with children – and the flexible catering.

The starting point for a wonderful family holiday in South Tyrol: Mühlbach

Before I head to the Pustertal , I visit Mühlbach, a hotspot for holidays in South Tyrol. I head up the mountain to the town of Vals, which is still very wintry on this April day. Nestled in gently snow-covered forests and mountains, the Obereggerhof is the next exciting place to stay for a farm holiday. The Gasser family accommodates their young and old guests in four holiday apartments that were newly built in 2010.

During my visit, two themes that play a major role in vacation here become apparent: children and enjoyment. The location in the woods allows children to discover new freedoms and immerse themselves in nature. A forest playground with a waterfall nearby, a play barn, a playroom and very casual mini-rooms in two apartments - perfect for letting children's imaginations run wild - are a dream for every child. Of course, there are animals all around: ponies, rabbits, chickens, cats and calves as well as sheep that also like to come to the Obereggerhof from the second farm, which is family-owned.

As soon as you check in, it becomes clear that the Obereggerhof is known for its own production, especially for its apples. A large selection of homemade delicacies is offered. For example:

  • Apple juice
  • Jams
  • Dried fruit
  • Eggs
  • Seasoned Salt
  • milk
  • etc.

The whole thing can also be ordered as a breakfast basket, for the perfect start to an eventful day of vacation, which could also take you to the “Acquarena” indoor swimming pool in Brixen . Entry is free for guests.

A farm to fall in love with, an alpine pasture to dream about

A little further into the valley, before the center of Vals, another farm shows off its special features. The Lechnerhof owned by the Zingerle family looks back on an eventful past. First mentioned in the 13th century, it is one of the oldest farms in the region. After the farm began being rented out as a youth hostel in 1968, a complete restart with four holiday apartments was made in 2021. In addition to the modern apartments, which are particularly suitable for families, the Zingerle family also owns an alpine hut on the breathtaking Fane Alm , 15 minutes away. We drive to the original-looking alpine village and experience true magic there. Imposing mountain peaks, rustic alpine huts and then one of the absolute highlights of my trip: around 50 chamois graze on a slope right next to the alpine pasture. A sight that is as unique as the grounded feeling in this special place.

The Lechnerhof is particularly impressive due to its location. The entrance to the Gitschberg Jochtal ski area is right next to the farm. The bus station is just a few meters from the farm, so you can experience all of the region's attractions without a car. In summer, there are also numerous discounts for guests of the Lechnerhof in Vals with the South Tyrolean Almencard . If you want to explore the area around Mühlbach / Vals with your dog, you will also find suitable accommodation here.

Guests who are enthusiastic about agriculture get the best insight into sustainable dairy farming here. Andreas Zingerle explains how modern dairy farming works in his farm tours. The organic-certified farm takes its role as a role model in dairy farming very seriously. While the adults deal with the details of farming, the little ones can play with the dwarf rabbits, dwarf goats, cats and dogs. More small animals will be added over the course of the year. There are also plans to redesign the common room. The popular play kitchen and table football table will certainly remain.

The Lechnerhof in Vals is definitely an El Dorado for families and offers a perfect base for exploring the region's impressive landscape, even in the off-season. The private alpine hut on the Fane Alm is definitely a gem.

That’s our journey through South Tyrol, before we continue in the Pustertal towards East Tyrol in our 3rd part.
