The Pustertal is a charming longitudinal valley with Bruneck as its main town. Coming from Brixen, the Dolomites are impressive to the right and the Zillertal Alps to the left. This impressive backdrop only opens up to me when I leave the main road and turn into one of the side valleys. In the centre of the Pustertal, facing north, lies the Antholzertal, known for biathlon and particularly beautiful hikes, for example to the Antholzer See.
Quiet time in the Antholz Valley
The first farm I came across for a farm holiday is the Bergerhof in Antholz Mittertal, beautifully quietly situated on the edge of the valley. The Pallhuber family, especially the senior bosses Silvia and Thomas, look after the farm very lovingly together with their three daughters Tamara, Denise and Carmen. The 5 holiday apartments are divided into two buildings and are ideally equipped for families. A playground, play kitchen, pedal tractors, a table football table and a table tennis table delight the children and certainly some adults too. The real stars of the farm, however, are the chickens, ducks, goats, rabbits, cats and cows. An active holiday on the farm with an insight into rural life in the Antholz Valley can be experienced at the Bergerhof.
The farm, first mentioned in around 1490, is one of the first farms in the valley to actively rent out rooms in the 1960s. The quiet location on the edge of the valley with a great view was ideal for holiday guests even then and a reason to keep coming back. This idyll was also evident during my visit, when a deer dared to come very close to the farm. Couples of all ages enjoy the time-out factor that the Bergerhof offers, even in the quieter seasons. Especially when the valley is covered in a colorful coat of colors in autumn, you can find magical peace there. The barrel sauna in the garden fits perfectly into this holiday dream. For the optimal feel-good factor , breakfast and bread roll service are also offered. Homemade jams, syrups and dairy products can also be purchased. Speaking of milk, it has even been awarded for its excellent quality.
Baking bread and enjoying life at Pichlerhof
Just a few minutes up the valley in Rasen-Antholz is the Steinkasserer family's Pichlerhof . Bread and games, a concept that has its origins in Italy, takes on a completely different meaning here. The farm, which is perfect for families and offers play opportunities for children both indoors and outdoors, has an exciting focus. Baking bread together in the wood-fired oven in front of the farmhouse promises exciting insights. Especially because the farm's own mill, which is powered by a water wheel, is right next to it. A small stream that flows through the farm provides the necessary energy. Your own grain, your own mill and then your own bread. What could be nicer than enjoying this traditional craft and the product from it up close? From summer 2024, day guests will also be able to experience this - in addition to holidaymakers on the farm. When you talk to the Steinkasserer family, you can feel that the hosts are happy to be there for their guests, work for them and do everything they can to ensure their satisfaction.
The farmhouse from the 17th century impresses with its excellent location in the center of the Antholz Valley, the high-quality apartments, the well-maintained farmhouse and the constant innovations, such as the recently built carport for the farm's guests. The range of animals on the farm will be even larger in the future. Alpacas and dwarf goats will join the cats, cattle, rabbits and chickens. A real petting zoo will be created on the farm. To make guests young and old even more happy, a lounge is being planned. Overall, it can be said that children in particular are very well integrated into farm life on the farm.
Whether you are a family with children and dogs, a couple looking for a break or a sporty holidaymaker, the Pichlerhof in Rasen-Antholz is an absolute recommendation.
Where the Sexten Dolomites make you gasp
I leave the Antholz Valley and head east. The majestic mountains rise ever closer, the Sexten Dolomites become visible and the Elferkogel appears in the most beautiful spring sunshine. Just before the border with Austria , the Puster Valley is bathed in an atmosphere that could hardly be more beautiful. I long to return, even though there are still a few hours left in South Tyrol.
In the municipality of Toblach, I go a little way up the mountain and discover the Mitterfeichterhof in Haselberg, completely isolated but with an incredibly beautiful view. The old farm is still in its original condition and so it is that you can find furnishings there that are over 300 years old. The rustic farm impresses with its loving and committed operators and its truly phenomenal location. The Stauder family takes excellent care of their guests and is proud of the property with its history-rich past. The details in and around the farm in particular convince me of the love with which the holiday farm is run. In addition to ancient unique items, there are also special places around the farm. Be it bunkers, a small church or the numerous hiking opportunities directly from the farm.
Like many farms in South Tyrol , the Mitterfeichterhof is also undergoing change. New accents are being set to offer modern comfort while still preserving the character of the farm.
As I cross the border into Austria, I am blinded by the sun, which had often been hidden during my trip. I finally head home with many impressions, wonderful experiences and the desire to return to South Tyrol soon.
