    • Forest sheep

Forest sheep have delicate anatomy and long, coarse wool. They are considered a robust and frugal breed with good milk production and, depending on gender, can weigh 55 or 80 kg. We also have triplets born from time to time. Since sheep can only raise two lambs, there is always a bottle baby to nurture.

AND A FEW MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THESE SPECIAL SHEEP
Small to medium-sized country sheep with long, coarse wool. Mostly white, occasionally brown animals. Bucks are often horned. Bucks: 60 to 80 kg, nuts: 40 - 55 kg.

The population: According to the red list, the forest sheep belongs to category 1 of extremely endangered domestic animal breeds.

    • Backwoods cattle

Backwoods cows have a light yellow to dark red, almost brown coat on a white background, are muted, spotted, piebald or speckled. The old Landschlag is said to have developed from Celtic cattle and is the smallest Central European cattle breed. Backwoods cows are considered robust, frugal, long-lived and very good at grazing.
AND A FEW MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THESE SPECIAL CATTLES
The Hinterwälder cattle are an old land breed that is said to have developed from Celtic cattle. In the high altitudes of the southern Black Forest with its extremely steep slopes, it developed into a decidedly independent breed. The head is mostly white, sometimes spotted. The withers of the cows are approx. 115-125 cm and weigh 380-480 kg.
The population: Endangered livestock breed of 1992, the smallest Central European cattle breed. Total population around 4,000 animals, cow population 2,200, around 50 stud bulls, around 15% of the cows are artificially inseminated. • Poitou donkey

Beppo was one of the first animals at the Hopfenburg. He moved from the Stuttgart Wilhelma to the Hopfenburg in August 2010. His friend Robin joined him six months later.
From that point on there was no stopping him. No simply secured gate or gate can withstand the clever ideas of the two. The two of them are particularly enchanting at wedding ceremonies when they accompany every “yes” with their strong “iah”.
Of course, petting is absolutely allowed and encouraged! Feeding, however, is not the case, because the robust four-legged friends need special food for their sensitive stomachs.
By the way: If you find it difficult to part with, you can find a limited edition and custom-made product from Steiff in the farm shop: Beppo with the button in the ear as a soft souvenir to take home.

AND A FEW MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THESE SPECIAL DONS
Poitou donkeys are the heaviest breed of donkey in the world and are characterized by their curly, reddish, long-haired coat. White markings on the mouth, the edges of the eyes and on the belly and an overall bony appearance are also typical. There are only a few purebred animals left in the world.
The population: In 2009, 17 breeders were licensed in Germany to breed registered Poitou donkeys. The stock was divided into 17 A-Book stallions (including 9 approved stallions), 28 A-Book mares, 30 B-Book mares and 24 B-Book stallions. From a breeding perspective, 2009 was a successful year in which 5 foals were born, including 2 A-book stallions. A total of 99 animals were registered. Directions

    SOME EXAMPLES:
    WITH PUBLIC TRANSPORT:
Use the train and bus to get to the Hopfenburg. You travel via Ulm/Schelklingen/Münsingen or Stuttgart/Metzingen/Bad Urach and take the bus to Münsingen train station. From there there is a direct footpath (approx. 1km) to the Hopfenburg.
    ON FOOT:
Via the HW5 of the Swabian Alb Association to Gomadingen/Marbach and from there the hiking trail marked with a triangle past Grafeneck Castle over the Fauserhöhe, Münsingen, to the Hopfenburg (approx. 8.5 km).
    WITH THE WHEEL:
Via the cycle path from Münsingen, entry is from Hülsenlaystraße opposite the Karl-Georg-Hadlenwang-Schule, or via the cycle path from the former military training area along the L230.
    BY HORSE:
Since horseback riding is not permitted on the paths of the Hülsenlay Nature Reserve, we ask that you only ride to us from the east over the bridge on the B465. Please make sure to inquire in advance, unfortunately we cannot accommodate spontaneous arrivals!
    BY GLIDER:
If necessary, we would like to ask you to contact the home airport of the European gliding champion Ulrich Schwenk in Münsingen-Dottingen. Here, too, it is possible to use the pick-up service if you register in good time.
BUT IT'S ALSO AVAILABLE BY CAR:
Via the B465 from Bad Urach via Seeburg to Münsingen. Follow the B465 through Münsingen until you leave the town. At the roundabout go straight ahead (2nd exit), after approx. 400m turn right to Hofgut Hopfenburg.
Or you come from the A 8, Merklingen exit, and follow the L1 230 and L 230 to Münsingen (the new bypass around Auingen is not yet available on all navigation devices). Just be brave, just follow the road and about 20 meters before the T-junction to the B 465, turn left to Hofgut Hopfenburg. In both cases, please follow the signs.
