Danger! Don't scare cows - otherwise the milk will turn sour

Danger! Don't scare cows - otherwise the milk will turn sour - bauernhofurlaub.info

We always heard that as children when we sneaked into the stable to play hide-and-seek or tag.

But today we know it was a joke from our grandpa and in order not to upset mom and dad, we “mostly” stuck to it so that the cattle could keep their rest periods in the stable.

Holidays on a farm - there is a lot to discover

Arriving at the holiday farm and exploring everything first – that’s how it goes for most people.

There is usually a lot of work waiting in the stable and around the farm and so you have the opportunity to help with many things, such as:

What should I pay attention to as a holiday guest so that nothing and no one gets angry?

As exciting as a holiday on the farm may be, you should not forget that there are also many dangers lurking here. Children should never be left unattended in the stable! Particular caution is required with the animals, the machines and the septic tank.

It is also IMPORTANT: REST IN THE COWSHALL!

A cow has up to 10 rest periods during the course of a day, most of which she spends lying down. Cows rest for around 12 to 14 hours a day and ruminate for 7 to 8 hours. These phases are extremely important for the well-being and performance of the animals.

Daily routine of a cow

Early in the morning, the farmer follows the demands of the hungry cows for their daily breakfast. The food is served to you and soon a satisfied chewing sound can be heard and the milking machine starts. One dairy cow after another is then milked. Some of the milk is then fed to the calves, the rest is later processed into butter, cheese, cream and yoghurt.

After giving milk, the cows are allowed to go out to pasture. While the older cows leisurely go on their way, the young cattle can hardly wait to get outside and keep bumping into each other.

In the meantime, the cattle's accommodation is being brought back into shape and the stable is being mucked out

Just in time for “dinner”, the cattle arrive again, the dairy cows are milked again and everyone takes their place in the stable again until the next day the alarm clock sounds again for the farmer’s wife and the farmer with a loud moo, moo, moo!

In the cold months the cows stay in the free stall.

Did you know?

Cows move between different functional areas within a freestall and can cover several kilometers a day. The floor of the playpen must therefore be sure-footed, clean and dry.

Fresh chicken eggs

After the barn work is done, it's now the turn of the chickens. First of all, the doors to the outside are opened here and breakfast is served for the chicken flock. The first fresh eggs are already in the nests and can be used for a delicious breakfast for the farmers.

Here too, keep quiet and don't disturb the chickens while they are laying eggs!

Did you know?

Chickens are omnivores and, depending on the breed and husbandry, live up to 15 years. Older chickens lay larger eggs, have no teeth, peck small stones - this is how the food is ground up in the gizzard and can run quite quickly. They can reach speeds of up to 15km/h.

Always something going on

A wide variety of animals live on our holiday farms. Sometimes you will only find one type of animal on a farm, other times you can discover a wide variety of animal breeds - from cattle, chickens, horses and donkeys to dogs and cats.

It is important to be careful with all animals and it is best to always approach calmly and not hectically. Ask your farm owners whether you are allowed to pet or even feed the animals and whether there are periods of rest when it is better not to disturb the farm residents and risk making someone angry 😊.
